Bowery Ballroom, can we start a movement to ditch Ticketmaster? For $15 tickets they charge over 20% for a “convenience charge” ($3.10 per ticket), then charge between $14.50 and $19.50 to print and send you your tickets.

If you want real tickets, the price jumps from $30 to $55.70. So for a company that handles massive quantities of printing and shipping, mostly electronically, they make roughly 2/3 (after UPS charge) of the what the venue, crew, equipment, band, and label take in combined. Robbery.

Luckily I live a couple blocks down from the Mercury Lounge where Bowery sells their tix and I buy them in person. With the money saved I usually purchase an over priced beer.

Im surprised Bowery Presents doesnt have their own online ticketing system in place especially since they own 5 venues.

PS the real robbery is the $2.50 they charge you to print your own tickets!!

MSG and I seem to go to a lot of the same shows, and I absolutely agree that this Ticketmaster shit is way past due to be done. For what its worth, most Bowery venues are small enough that the will-call line is the same as the regular line, so choosing that option isn’t any extra work for you.

Dennis has produced some of the most impressive video I’ve seen come out of a DSLR, and is the process of compiling his work in Afganistan into a full length documentary– which if the trailer is any indication– will be stunning. Much of his success here is likely due, besides his obvious talent, to a custom steady-cam rig he built for use with the Canon 5DMKII in hostile environments.

Perhaps I’ll try this out in a meeting today.

After hearing the term 13,432 times, I still don’t know what a “mind map” is and what its use is.

I think mind maps get a bad rap, mostly because there’s so much shitty software out there. Its easy to build a simple mind mapping application and call it done, but nigh-impossible to make a good one (I’ve yet to find one that’s actually usable).

The idea of a mind map is to display and organize information or ideas spatially, allowing you to easily show hierarchy, category, and connections between concepts. This is really useful when you’re trying to understand, create, or remember nebulous concepts with no natural inherent organization. A lot of people use mind maps for brainstorming and organizing ideas for writing or business, and for inspiration in creative endeavors such as design.

An added benefit of mind maps is that if you’re using them as a study aid, you gain an extra aspect of memory over traditional “2D” aids such as lists or notes. Without realizing it, the fact that you can spatially distinguish between concepts in a mind map makes it easier to remember what the concepts are, and how they relate to each other.

The problem with doing this in software is that mind mapping is supposed to be quick and dirty– it needs to be. Pencil/pen/crayon and paper is the best way, and until software is smart enough to understand what we’re trying to do (maybe using gestures, etc), its just going to get in the way.

B, 6 cans of paint (5.9 exactly). Don’t get confused by the fractions, they’re so small they don’t really make a difference, and they’re easy to convert to decimals if you have a calculator.

I do random word problems on the internet for fun, but I’m taking College Algebra for the 3rd time this semester. FML.

A lot of people seem to have constant issues with their phones, computers, printers, hard drives, and other technology breaking or failing.

None of my technology ever breaks at the rate that I see from other people.

Even though it’s a bit presumptuous, my best guess is that I just treat my electronics better than most people.

Call my holier-than-thou if you want, but I absolutely agree with Marco. Sure, I’ve had issues with hardware over the years, but its always been due to manufacturer defects or flaws in design that caused an early failure. I’ve never lost any technology more valuable than a CD or two. I’m currently using a G4 PowerBook that’s almost 5 years old, and the main reason I’m upgrading is not because its broken, but because its just too slow. I can count on my thumbs how many times I’ve dropped my iPhone. It’s been knocked off my desk a fair bit more than that, finally resulting in a broken vibrate mechanism, but that can’t really be helped. While I grew up in a relatively privileged environment, I was very rarely just *given* anything. No game consoles, no fancy super-soakers or RC cars. I got things I needed, and things at birthdays sure, but other than that, I was expected to save up my pocket money for what I wanted. Like Marco says, maybe its because of this that I’ve always taken exceptional care of my tools and toys– and frankly I can’t imagine treating them any other way. It just seems wrong.

The best part of living in the world today is that if you have an idea you can make it a reality or find someone else that has already done it. The beauty of living in the future will be that the final product of your idea will be presented to you.

I just had a taste of that future with this video.

Last night I was talking to a friend who mentioned that she went running last saturday morning and enjoyed how the streets were empty because of this initiative. I mentioned how awesome it would be to ride bike up Park Avenue and record it. The video above did just that. I can’t wait to be drunk off the future.

PS: Summer Streets ends this Saturday
